A Primer to Systems Thinking

Description

We are surround by systems and they have a major impact on our personal and organisational lives. Systemic structures create complex dynamics that influence behaviour and results. We are more effective when we have better appreciation of this complexity and master the tools to manage it.

Participants will be able to apply a diagnostic tool to see beyond the day-to-day events and identify the underlying structures that create it. This awareness will allow multiple actions to be taken at different parts of the system to create change more effectively and sustainably.

The training content will contain foundational theories, methods and tools for systems thinking. A combination of learning methodologies will also be used. These include, short presentations, videos, interactive learning activities and practices.

Outcomes

  1. Understand the concept of complexity and how it relates to different types of problems.
  2. Use a Behaviour-Over-Time (BOT) Graph to map co-relationships in systems.
  3. Use Levels of Perspectives (LOP) as a diagnostic tool to shift from event level to systems level thinking.
  4. Identify higher leverage actions for more effective systemic intervention.
